Antique Pottery from The Drawing Room of Newport.

# 4412. A ceramic vase. Signed "J Bennett" "N.Y." " 1881". To quote Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen in In Pursuit of Beauty "Bennett's technique of underglaze decoration-the design painted in thin, richly colored slip into the surface of a vessel before a coating of clear, shiny glaze is applied-was one he worked to perfection throughout his career. His efforts were greeted with adulation by critics of the day, and the process, which was emulated by Bennett's art-potter contemporaries, came to be dubbed "Bennett Ware." Bennett's worked were exhibited by decorative arts societies in Boston, New York, Cincinnati, San Francisco to mention a few. His special effect was created by the contrast between the design being outlined against a mottled background as in the example above. This vase which is in perfect condtion is app. 7" tall. This item has been sold. If you have any pottery signed Bennett similiar to this vase (or charger) we are always interested in purchasing items.
